Ukrainian Soldier, Bare Knuckle Fighter Bovar “The Gladiator” Khanakov Opens Up about War’s Impact on Hometown of Mariupol, Tumultuous Upbringing that Lead Him to Boxing, US Debut and More

Miami, Florida – This week, BYB Extreme host and former fighter Erin Toughill sat with Bovar “The Gladiator” Khanakov, a Ukrainian soldier who fled Mariupol following the Russian Federation’s attack on the city and settled in Sacramento to pursue his combat career.  Khanakov will make his US debut on Saturday, November 19 at BYB 13: Tampa Brawl for it All at the Florida State Fairgrounds against Isaac “Puma” Freeman in a middleweight matchup.

Khanakov opened up about the war, leaving his hometown of Mariupol after it was “destroyed by the Russian Federation,” his tumultuous upbringing that brought him to fighting, his training in Sacramento with a team that includes Urijah Faber and Viacheslav (Slava) Borshchev, what to expect in his November 19 BYB debut, and more.  Below are quotes and clips.  You can view the full episode here

On leaving war-destroyed Mariupol, Ukraine

“I came [to the US] because in my country there is war.  The Russian Federation destroyed my city…destroyed my home.  I didn’t plan to come to America, but because of the situation with my country, I came to America…My city, Mariupol, is all destroyed.  One [hundred] thousand people dead in my country.  This is very terrible.”  [CLIP]

“About 100,000 civilians died as a result of Russia’s attack on my city of Mariupol. We didn’t have Nazis and we lived well. Every day they destroy my country and continue to kill civilians from all types of missiles.”

On training with and support of UFC stars Urijah Faber and (Slava) Borshchev at Alpha Male in Sacramento

“I have the best gym, Alpha Male. Urijah Faber helped me follow my dream. My manager called. He helped me to find the gym.  He introduced me to Urijah. Viacheslav (Slava) Borshchev supported me. Supported my family…gave me toys for my kid.  Now he’s training with me.  He is one of the best strikers in the world, a kickboxing world champion.  Urijah is allowing me to train in the gym and giving me all that I need.” [CLIP]

On his motivation to fight

“When I was 5-6 years old, my father drank a lot. He smashed my mother.  I see this when I was a little boy.  I wanted to protect my mother.  I went to the boxing gym.  My motivation – protect my mother…He is around my home and I was prepared to box him.  For 5 years, I trained very hard.  My father now he doesn’t smash my mother.  This is a part of life. So I train like a warrior. Sometimes I fight with my father at home.  This is my life.” [CLIP]

On his opponent Isaac Freeman

“I have a lot of experience in bare knuckle. Boxing and bare knuckle are two different sports.  There’s difference in preparing for this battle. My opponent is a boxer and I know he prepares like a boxer. But bare knuckle is not boxing…I don’t like to talk, I want to show you.  You’ll remember me.”

“I am prepared.  I want to show America who are Ukrainian fighters.”

In addition to Khanakov-Freeman, BYB 13 will feature 10 hard-hitting fights including a pair of high profile title matches. BYB’s Desmond Green will take on BKB’s Scott McHugh for both the BYB Middleweight title and the Police Gazette World Diamond Belt. Tony Lopez, undefeated in the Trigon, makes his first heavyweight title defense as he takes on challenger DJ Linderman

Bare Knuckle Fighting Pioneer Dada 5000 Makes Return to the Trigon

Bare Knuckle Fighting Pioneer Dada 5000 Makes Return to the Trigon

Dhafir “Dada 5000” Harris will face off in a special attraction match on November 19 at BYB 13 Tampa Brawl for it All at the Florida State Fairgrounds.

Miami, FL – BYB Extreme announced today that company co-founder and bare knuckle fighting pioneer Dhafir “Dada 5000” Harris will make a return to the ring in the patented mighty Trigon on November 19, 2022 at BYB 13 Tampa Brawl for it All at the Florida State Fairgrounds.

Harris has done and seen it all in the fight world. His organized backyard events at the world-famous Greenhouse in West Perrine attracted notoriety throughout South Florida before going viral online and making him a household name. That success, along with his business savvy and creative vision, lead to, among other things, his co-founding BYB Extreme Fighting Series, being the subject of the blockbuster Netflix documentary Dawg Fight, and headlining Bellator 149 in what would be the promotion’s most watched event.

The November 19 heavyweight bare knuckle matchup against Matt Strickland, marks Harris’ first in-ring action since 2016.

On his return:

“I have a lot left inside of me and can be a breath of fresh air to what has become a very stale fight game. I’m one of the last of that original breed of modern mixed martial artists.  I’m recognizable and people identify with what they are familiar with. I want to do this for the fans as much as for myself.”

On being in the best shape of his life:

“I work out 2-3 hours a day in the gym, can bench press 225 pounds 30 times with ease, and I can go out and run a 4.4/4.5 40-yard dash. More importantly, my body hasn’t taken the bumps alot of fighters my size and age have. I have low miles and with little damage.”

On his debut in the Trigon:

“I am a smart fighter.  I make a game plan and then I go out and execute it.  The Trigon plays right into my style.  I can cut the ring off and use it to my benefit.  The fight is easy.  We start close and when I come out with my power, there’s nowhere to go.”

BYB 13’s lineup features a trio of title matches. BYB’s Desmond Green will take on BKB’s Scott McHugh for both the BYB Middleweight title and the Police Gazette World Diamond Belt.  BYB Champion Paty Juarez and Tampa’s Monica Medina will face off in a rematch for the BYB Women’s Lightweight Title and Police Gazette women’s 135 Diamond Belt. Tony Lopez, undefeated in the Trigon, makes his first heavyweight title defense as he takes on challenger DJ Linderman.

BYB Announces Signing of Toby”2 Quick” Misech to Multi-Fight Deal

BYB Announces Signing of Toby “2 Quick” Misech to Multi-Fight Deal

Former UFC and Bellator featherweight returns to the mighty Trigon at November 19th’s BYB 13 Tampa Brawl for it All

Miami, FL – Fresh off its UK debut, matchmaker Mel Valenzuela announced today the signing of Toby Misech to a multi-fight deal with BYB Extreme. Misech made an impressive bare knuckle debut at this past March at BYB 9, losing by fourth-round knockout to current BYB welterweight champion Seth Shaffer. Misech will return to the patented mighty Trigon on November 19th at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa against Julio Tanori, and is already eyeing a grudge-match against Shaffer.

Said Misech, “It feels great to get signed by BYB. It gives me a new drive. My last BYB fight, I was doing a mixture of boxing and MMA. Now, my focus is on point and locked in – I’m strictly focused on bare knuckle for this upcoming fight.”

He added, “I’ve won titles in MMA and now it’s time to win a bare knuckle title. You best believe I’m coming for a rematch [with Shaffer].”

“He has to earn it first,” responded Shaffer.

Misech is the latest in a strong group of fighters signed by BYB. Earlier this year, BYB announced that it signed BYB Heavyweight Champion Tony Lopez, Lorawnt-T “Smash” Nelson, Monica Medina, Miranda Barber, Chad Kelly, Mark “The Shark” Irwin, Sonya Dreiling, Mumia Abu Dey Ali, Cubb Hawkins, and Jamie Driver to multi-fight deals.

Said Valenzuela, “I’m excited to have Toby join our already-talented roster of fighters.  His pedigree stacks up against anyone in the sport. As a matchmaker, our signings, a combination of established talent and homegrown stars, has given me the ability to continue to put together the best match-ups in bare knuckle.  I challenge you to find better fights anywhere.”
